Top Tips to a Fabulous Fire

Wood Burning stoves are becoming an increasingly attractive addition to all of our homes.

Everyone who has ever had a stove or open fire has their way of laying and getting a good fire going. Whatever works best for you then stick with it – you will get to know your fireplace well by the time summer comes in! Always check the manual for your stove type prior to lighting and use the manufacturers recommended process.

For those of you new to a fabulous log burning fire our top tips to creating a warm, cosy and welcoming fire apply to both open fires and modern stoves will get you started:

1
Wood burning stoves require oxygen to burn – start your fire with, not too tight, crumpled up newspaper followed by a layer of Kwik Lite kindling. Leave room for air to circulate around the kindling.
2
Position two logs in an inverted V in the stove or fire. The V shape should be facing you (inverted) allowing oxygen flow in and around the logs. Open up the air controls on your stove until the fire takes and begins to generate heat and flame.
3
Some stoves have separate air controls for the flu and firebox – we recommend opening them all up until the your fire is going well – wood generally prefers draught from above so where possible use the top air controller to control the fire and turn the bottom down first (this varies from stove to stove and if you combine burning other fuels such as coal so check your manual).
4
Paper takes roughly 5 seconds to catch, followed by the kindling within a couple of minutes and then the logs should take after that. Within 10 minutes you should have a lovely roaring fire with flame and producing heat.
5
Keep an eye on your fire and look for signs that you have adjusted controllers too soon – smoke in the firebox or “dying down” and “not taking” usually indicates too much too soon. This may also be dependent upon how good your chimney is and the “draw” This improves as the stove heats up generally.
6
To top up or not to top up: the best time to add more logs is when the bulk of previous logs are burnt away but visible flames can still be seen. It may be necessary to open up your air controls again to aid the logs to “catch” and returning them down as the wood takes.
7
DO NOT use paraffin, petrol etc to light a stove or open fire – the consequences can be fatal.
8
DO NOT burn coated or treated woods or other non-specific articles in your fire.
